The genus Neolebias contains 12 species of small tetra from western Africa. Neolebias trewavasae attains a maximum length of about 5 cm and is one of the largest members of the genus. Sadly the species is only very rarely available in the trade, so we are glad that we could import them now once more from Cameroon.
The regular coloration of the pretty fish reminds one strongly in the coloration of the South American tetras of the genus Nematobrycon and Impaichthys, the emperor tetras. The quiet and grave swimming behaviour is also very similar in both groups. This is the reason why we suggest the common name “African Emperor tetra” for the species. But a real royal outfit get the fish in breeding condition. The males become deep red then.
