This cichlid, which is growing up to approx. 20cm is living along the catchment area of the Orinoco, whereit mostly lives in slowly flowing or even standing waters. You often find it right in front of the shore, where it inhabits the upper water layer. Regarding the nutrition M. insignis is totally uncomplicated, because these are classic all-eaters . But they are not suitable for plant aquariums, as they often start to pull at the plants as they get older. On the other hand smaller fish are not safe from this species either and can thouroughly extend their menu. Mesonauta insignis – like all other flagcichlids – belongs to the kinds, which should not be kept under 26°C, as they would fade. If you increase the temperature to 30°C, however, they will show themselves in their most beautiful robe. Also slightly sour and soft waters increase their colour. M. insignis is a open breeder, who lay their eggs on plant leaves or roots. The leading of the young fish of flagcichlids is interesting to watch time and time again, since the shoal of young fish mostly stays above the body of the parental animals and not, as it is typical for cichlids, below the parents.(Photo & Text T.
