Compared with Dario dario this species is hardly known by the general aquarists, although the males who obtain and guard their territory are looking very beautiful. Although they do not display the coloration like D. dario, they definitely show the same intense red colour. Unfortenately D. hysginon only shows his full colour when he is feeling well, and will look rather pale in the shops. As with all representatives of the Badidae family, these fish can be somewhat difficult concerning feeding and live food is essential although they might eat frozen food. Flake food however will not be taken. In a well-decorated aquarium, with enough shady places, the male will start defending a territory thereby showing his finest colours and with the appropriate female reproduction will start soon. The eggs and fry are usually not guarded but due to guarding the territory a certain amount of young will survive if one chooses the other tank mates carefully. Because D. hyginon will not reach a length of more then 3 cm large companions should not be kept with this beautiful little fellow.(Text & Photo: Thomas Weidner)
