Another rarity reached us from Peru: Serrasalmus compressus. The systematics of Piranhas are still poorly understood, especially young fish are very difficult to determine. Formerly this species has been often traded as S. hollandi. S. compressus reaches a maximum length of about 20 cm.
This species of Piranha are solitary fish that feed in their natural habitat preferably on the fins of other fish.
