For
the first time ever we were able to import this extremely unusual
tetra. Lonchogenys ilisha is a member of the family Acestrochrhynchidae,
which means the species is closer related to the barracuda tetras
(Acestrorhynchus) than, let’s say, to a cardinal tetra. Nevertheless our
first observations proofed the species to be very peaceful, as well to
conspecifics and to other fish of similar size.
We
think that the specimens with the golden shine and the bright orange
caudal fin are the males. However, no information is available so far
regarding the aquarium biology of that species. The maximum length
reported for L. ilisha is 6-7 cm, our specimens are 5-7 cm long and so
most probably almost fully grown.
Lonchogenys
ilisha is the only known member of the genus. Its distribution is in
the upper and middle Rio Negro region in Brazil and Colombia. Our
specimens originate from Colombia.
